Japanese vocabulary: When talking about other people's families

However, if you want to talk about someone else's family in an unspecified situation, you can use the following vocabulary words:

• 彼の家族（かれのかぞく）: His/her family.
• 彼の父（かれのちち）: His/her father.
• 彼の母（かれのはは）: His/her mother.
• 彼の兄弟姉妹（かれのきょうだい）: His/her brother.
• 彼の祖父（かれのそふ）: His/her grandfather.
• 彼の祖母（かれのそぼ）: His/her grandmother.
• 彼の子供（かれのこども）: His/her child.
• 彼の夫（かれのおっと）: His/her husband.
• 彼の妻（かれのつま）: His/her wife.
• 彼の親戚（かれのしんせき）: His/her relative.

For example: "彼の家族は父、母、兄弟姉妹がいます。彼には2人の子供もいます." (His/her family has father, mother and brothers. He/she also has 2 children.)

• 彼の祖父母（かれのそふぼ）: His/her grandparents.
• 彼の孫（かれのまご）: His/her grandchild.
• 彼の娘（かれのむすめ）: His/her daughter.
• 彼の息子（かれのむすこ）: His/her son.
• 彼の義理の父（かれのぎりのちち）: His/her father-in-law.
• 彼の義理の母（かれのぎりのはは）: His/her mother-in-law.
• 彼の義理の兄弟姉妹（かれのぎりのきょうだい）: His/her brother-in-law.
• 彼のいとこ（かれのいとこ）: His/her cousin.
• 彼のおじ（かれのおじ）: His/her uncle.
• 彼のおば（かれのおば）: His/her aunt.

For example: "彼の祖父母はとても優しいです。彼のいとこは一緒に育った兄弟のようです." (His/her grandparents are very kind. His/her cousins are like brothers who grew up together.)

• いとこの子供（いとこのこども）: Son of his/her cousin.
• 義理の兄（ぎりのあに）: His/her spouse.
• 義理の妹（ぎりのいもうと）: His/her spouse's sister.
• 彼の親戚の家族（かれのしんせきのかぞく）: His/her relative's family.
• 彼の姻族（かれのいんぞく）: His/her spouse's family.

For example: "彼のいとこの子供たちはとてもかわいいです。彼の義理の兄は優れた人格を持っています." (His/her cousin's children are lovely. His/her spouse has an excellent personality.)

Note that talking about other people's families in Japanese should be approached with respect and care. Avoid asking questions that are too personal and always follow social rules when talking about other people's families.
