Built in 1884 (Meiji 17), this elegant residence was constructed as a retreat for Tokugawa Akitake, the younger brother of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. Akitake spent his later years here, surrounded by serene gardens and traditional Japanese architecture.

In 1951, the property was donated to the city, and in 1991, the surrounding 2.3 hectares were developed into the "Tojogaoka Historical Park," making it accessible to the public. In 2007, Tojo-tei House was honored as one of Japan's "Top 100 Historical Parks," recognizing its importance and beauty.

The house itself is a masterpiece of Meiji-era architecture, blending traditional Japanese design with Western influences. Visitors can explore the well-preserved rooms, featuring tatami mats, shoji screens, and intricate wooden carvings. The spacious veranda offers a perfect spot to admire the meticulously landscaped gardens, which change with the seasons, showcasing cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and serene snowscapes in winter.

A stroll through Tojo-tei House and its gardens provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The park's expansive grounds include walking paths, ponds, and a variety of plant species, making it a delightful place for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. Information plaques in English and Japanese offer insights into the history and significance of the site, ensuring that international visitors can fully appreciate its cultural value.

In addition to the historical and natural beauty, Tojo-tei House often hosts cultural events, tea ceremonies, and exhibitions, providing a rich, immersive experience for visitors. Whether you're a history buff, a fan of Japanese architecture, or simply looking for a tranquil spot to relax, Tojo-tei House in Matsudo City is a must-visit destination.
