Takoyaki

Takoyaki literally means "grilled octopus". A batter and egg dough are cooked with a slice of octopus, pickled ginger and scallions, using a special takoyaki pan to shape the ingredients into small balls.

Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is a pancake-like dish popular in different styles throughout Japan. In Osaka , shredded cabbage and a variety of other ingredients such as squid, shrimp, octopus or meat are mixed into the batter and cooked before serving with okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, green laver (aonori) and dried bonito (katsuobushi) ).

Kushikatsu

Kushikatsu are deep-fried and deep-fried pieces of food. Meat and vegetables are the most common ingredients for kushikatsu, but some restaurants also have more exotic varieties like strawberries on their menus.

Kitsune Udon

Teppanyaki means "grilled on a metal plate", referring to the style of cooking a meal on an iron grill in front of customers. At teppanyaki restaurants, diners are seated at the counter, where the chef prepares the food and then serves it immediately.

Where to eat

The best place to experience Osaka's food culture is the neon-filled Dotonbori district near Namba Station, where all kinds of eateries line the main road and many side streets.

For a nostalgic atmosphere of past decades, the Shinsekai district with its kushikatsu and shogi shops can't be beat. Another major dining area is Kitashinchi , a ten-minute walk south of Osaka Station, while Osaka Station City itself is a safe destination for less adventurous diners with its many floors of elegant restaurants.
